The reader comes first
Every screen is judged on one question: does this get you back into the book faster? Anything that answers "no" gets cut, however good it looks in a demo.
The Founders Ltd is the name on the paperwork. In practice it's three people who got tired of finishing a day having read four thousand posts and zero pages — and decided to build the fix themselves.
Nobody needs convincing that reading is good for them. The problem is that a book asks for a posture, a chair, and half an hour, while a phone asks for nothing at all. So the phone wins, every night, for years.
We stopped trying to break the habit and started trying to hijack it.The vertical swipe, the endless upward motion, the little reward at the bottom of every card — none of that is inherently bad. It's just been pointed at the wrong content. Point it atMiddlemarch instead and the same reflex that burns an evening will finish a novel.
Scrolls started as something we wanted for ourselves and turned into the thing all three of us now use every day. We build it ourselves, and we answer our own support email.
We built it to answer to us, not a growth chart. Nobody is asking us to make the streak a little more manipulative just to raise engagement. If a feature would be good for the metrics and bad for your reading, it doesn't ship.
Short list, deliberately. These are the ones we've actually turned features down over.
Every screen is judged on one question: does this get you back into the book faster? Anything that answers "no" gets cut, however good it looks in a demo.
No recommendation algorithm, no notification designed to pull you back in. The streak exists to reward you, not to punish a missed day.
Three people, deliberately small, no growth target we didn't set ourselves. Staying small is what lets us keep rule one and rule two.
The boring but necessary part. Scrolls is operated by The Founders Ltd — this is where to write if you need to reach an actual human.
The app is on its way, and the first swipe will take about four seconds.
